Our history

“Once upon a time…” is a suitable introduction to Fjällgården, or Fjällstugan as it was called when it was officially opened, along with the Bergbanan funicular, on 7 March 1910 by HRH Prince Carl. At that time, Åre was a summer resort. The railway had brought guests in search of fresh air, high class city folk who wanted to breathe clean air and see the magnificent scenery.

Since then, action and activity has been Fjällgården’s motto. A tennis court was built in the grounds by Slazinger&Son and when the guests later knew to make the most of the resort’s winter months as well, it was in the form of bobsleigh, curling, ice dance and figure skating, of which the latter were performed on the ice rink in front of the hotel.

Alpine skiing began to take off in the 1930s, but it didn’t make a real breakthrough until 1953-54, when the Alpine World Championships were held in Åre and the Swiss and US teams stayed at Fjällgården. The rest of the story belongs to the history of Swedish alpine skiing and is ever present in the hotel’s walls, tables, chairs and beams.
